Event Details

Art in Our Library is pleased to welcome artist Steve Shriver's lecture. He will provide a quick run through of the relationship of ornament and art, from the very earliest human decorations dated 75,000 years ago, to the current state of ornament, as seen in graffiti, tattoo, and industrial design. Throughout the history of art, ornament has played a very important role, until the 20th century banished it to the outlands of machine production. But handmade ornament still lurks under much of what is art today, and it is a very good way to learn how to make art.

Join Steve after the lecture in the Peninsula Center Foyer for a reception for his show, My Death Waits There, a show of paintings made between 2019 and 2016, when a car ran him over and almost ended his ride.

Steve got a degree in Studio Art from Wesleyan University in 1981. He’s been making art ever since, with about 20 years of making a living for his family by doing murals and decorative painting in many houses, hotels, and restaurants around the world. You can see his public mural in Hermosa Beach (at Pier and Cypress St.) Much of his work has focused on the world around us, as seen through the eyes of classical ornament and artistry.
