Published in 1993, the novel takes place in the LA area during the 2020s. Opening in 2024, the novel shows a climatically and socially chaotic U.S. in constant upheaval. "There’s no major event that wracks the United States, just an accumulation of serious problems (climate change, inequality), and second-order crises (hunger, war, an epidemic of abuse of dangerous designer drugs)." Within this apocalyptic environment, protagonist Lauren, takes to the road, building a community based on the tenets of a new belief system she calls Earthseed - All that you touch you change. All that you change changes you. The only lasting truth is change. God is Change.
