Opening Reception:

Exhibit Title: Sea & Shore

How do we see the sea? From the tideline? From the highway? From a kayak or a hilltop? Members of PADA, a peninsula based group of photographers and digital artists respond to that question in Sea & Shore, opening in the Library’s art gallery June 5. For the artists, living at the coast means both tranquil views and storm threats, lazy beach town fun and the drama of a major port. Their works on paper, metal and canvas celebrate what happens in places where land and water come together, along with the varying textures of sand and fog, weathered wood and luminous light.

We hope you will visit this beautiful exhibit and join us for the opening reception where attendees will have the opportunity to meet and talk with the artists.

Opening Reception for art exhibit featuring PADA

4:00 PM - 7:00 PM
Malaga Cove Library
Gallery and Garden

Please join us for the opening reception of the art exhibition featuring PADA (Photographic and Digital Artists).

All are welcome! Light refreshments will be provided.

PADA is a collective of seasoned and innovative artists specializing in the continually evolving art form of photography. The youngest of the eight artists’ groups affiliated with the Palos Verdes Art Center, PADA members move toward creative exploration and excellence and adding knowledge of other art forms by sharing our ideas and techniques, critiquing one another’s work, engaging guest speakers, and participating in group exhibitions, workshops and field trips. Active participation by each member assures a rewarding association for all.

Our members’ approach to photographic art ranges from traditional “straight,” black-and-white silver gelatin prints produced in the darkroom to images meticulously crafted in the computer “lightroom.” Between these boundaries lies enormous variety, including light painting, scanner photography, collage and mixed media. In all cases, photography is involved in creating the artwork. PADA members draw from their diverse professional backgrounds--including education, journalism, psychology, engineering, computer science, medicine, as well as fine art and commercial photography--and bring a wealth of imagination. What they each share is a passion for using a camera to experiment, innovate and create unique windows through which to view the world.

Chasing Joy Through the Lens: A Photographer's Journey

3:00 PM - 4:00 PM
Malaga Cove Library
Gallery and Garden
This talk explores the methods and mindset of how and where a passionate photographer celebrates his space in time by sharing his pursuit of imagery beyond glancing at the world, but instead, seeing the majesty of the noticed and unnoticed. From his backyard to the frontiers around the globe, his works focus our visions and perceptions of our similarities and diversities.

Torrance-based photographer, Patrick Smyth, has been honing his skills in photography for decades. Originally intrigued by landscape and wildlife photography, Patrick cast aside the premise of settling into specific photographic genres and detoured to capturing images and stories of the noticed and unnoticed.  Patrick blends his photography skills with a passion for writing. He delights in taking viewers to destinations near and far, bringing focus to the beauty
of diverse peoples and cultures, finding objects grand and small, all the while discovering, embracing, and sharing the stories behind his images.

Patrick’s evolution from viewing the world on a more literal canvas to a more creative and esoteric portfolio allowed him to introduce other elements to his talent.  Drawing inspiration from the paintings of Italian Baroque artist Caravaggio and his pronounced shadow play, Patrick has adopted techniques to challenge the boundaries of contemporary portraiture. His photos seek to unmask; to capture the momentary essence of models, dancers, and tribespeople, while telling the emotional stories of passion and perseverance.  Patrick’s photographic journey was the topic of a recent feature in Peninsula Magazine (January 2024).
